The Murky Waters of Anxiety

Anxiety taken to the heightened level of panic attacks can in itself be a disabling disorder…and a frightening one. A sufferer of this sneaky disorder never knows when a panic attack will sweep over him or her like a tidal wave. And, the fear of having a panic attack only adds to the anxiety. But, along with this, the sufferer needs to be extra cautious that panic attack symptoms are actually a panic attack and not symptoms of another more serious illness.

Panic attack symptoms can range from a racing heart, shortness of breath, to pins and needles in the limbs or throughout the body. As mentioned above the symptoms are frightening – your body goes into an overdrive mode of fight or flight. It’s as if Godzilla is alive and glaring down with mouth open ready to devour you. And, you are panic stricken and frozen. Your heart feels like it will explode out of your chest, you can feel a pressure on your chest, you begin to hyperventilate, you get shaky and disoriented, you’re sure you’re going to die…

Sounds terrifying, doesn’t it? Well, that’s not the worse part. A true anxiety attack will last for a certain amount of time – maybe 10-20 minutes. If you don’t over hyperventilate and pass out, your heart will begin to slow down, your breathing will stabilize, and you will start to feel relief. What a panic attack sufferer needs to be aware of is that those symptoms may be due to something other than severe anxiety. This is where anxiety can be like being in murky water – you can’t actually see what’s going on underneath.

There are a number of illnesses and disorders that have similar symptoms to panic attacks. Illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Multiple Sclerosis and Heart Disease can produce a racing heart, pins and needles, pressure or pain in the chest, shakiness, and a number of other frightening symptoms. A problem arises when the panic attack sufferer doesn’t acknowledge that he/she may have a serious health problem.

Not being absolutely certain that your panic attacks are actually anxiety related panic attacks can be dangerous. A number of disabling illnesses such as Heart Disease can be deadly if not diagnosed and treated promptly. An illness such a Multiple Sclerosis can worsen and lead to much more disabling symptoms such as limb weakness, balance issues, sight disturbances, and even movement problems. Being diagnosed as soon as possible is essential. The same holds true for CFS and FM, if properly diagnosed, a protocol and medications can help alleviate some of the symptoms.

If you suffer from panic attacks, you need to find a doctor who is willing to search for the cause of the symptoms. Starting with your general practitioner is step one. You might also think about seeing a neurologist and rheumatologist. Don’t accept being dismissed – find a doctor who takes you and your symptoms seriously.

Always remember, knowledge is power and in certain circumstances it can mean the difference between life and death.

Alpha Lipoic Acid and MS

Here is an article from Mercola.com about the possible benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid. Please note, I am not endorsing this treatment; I am merely bringing it to your attention. As with all health issues, you must talk to your doctor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Antioxidant Can Smash Insulin Resistance and Autoimmune Disease
I first became aware of the alpha lipoic regimen by Dr. Burt Berkson in the late 90’s. Early on in his career, while an internist, he was given several patients who were expected to die from hepatitis C. His job was more or less to simply baby sit them in the ICU and watch them die.
But Dr. Berkson was a rebel at heart and he simply couldn’t do that. Instead he called an associate at the National Institutes of Health and found out how he could treat them. He learned that alpha lipoic acid had some impressive experimental support.
Remarkably, although these patients were expected to die within a few weeks, they all completely recovered!
However not all went well for Dr. Berkson as he made his superiors look foolish and they simply could not tolerate that so rather than embrace his findings, they actively suppressed the results and made his life miserable for showing them up.
This was a pivotal moment in Dr. Berskson’s career and caused him to make choices that eventually led to where he is at now. Since then, Dr. Berkson has lectured all over the world on this topic, and published a study on the use of antioxidants for the treatment of hepatitis C.
His first book, The Alpha-Lipoic Acid Breakthrough was published in 1998.
As many of you already know, I am not fond of recommending many supplements, but I do believe that antioxidants make sense for many of us.
Why You Need Antioxidants
Your entire body, including your DNA, is under endless, daily assault from a variety of sources, from poor diets to pollution. Think of your cells, including your brain cells, each getting hit by free-radicals thousands of times a day. This violent process is called “oxidation,” which damages your cells.
Enter antioxidants. They include vitamins and other nutrients that target free radicals.
Food, particularly fruits and vegetables, is a powerful source of these valiant protectors, and your body produces some itself.
Their role is to limit the damage to your cells, which can slow down disease and signs of aging.
In the case of alpha lipoic acid, your body does produce it in minute quantities, but most of it comes from your diet. Some of the best natural sources include grass-fed red meat and organ meats.
The Benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) has many functions, but it’s one of the most effective free radical scavengers, and the only one known to easily get into your brain.
It also has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, and glutathione. So, when your body has used up these antioxidants, if there’s ALA around, it helps regenerate them.
You may not know this, but glutathione is another very important antioxidant. You can get it from supplements, but the only form that works effectively is the reduced form, which is difficult to absorb when taken orally. It is much more cost effective to supplement with precursors, or items like alpha lipoic acid that regenerates glutathione.
Alpha lipoic acid also recycles coenzyme Q10 and NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).
But, if that wasn’t enough, this powerful antioxidant is also:
• A great modifier of gene expression to reduce inflammation
• A very potent heavy metal chelator
• An enhancer of insulin sensitivity
The benefits of ALA can appear near miraculous. For example, according to Dr. Berkson, Russia has successfully used ALA intravenously to reverse ischemia reperfusion injuries by injecting it right after a heart attack or a stroke.
And people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome tend to do much better when taking lipoic acid, as it enhances insulin sensitivity.
There’s even been quite a bit of research showing it can restore T cell function. T cells are a type of white blood cells that are of key importance to your immune system, and are at the core of adaptive immunity, the system that tailors your body’s immune response to specific pathogens.
What Health Conditions Can be Treated With Alpha Lipoic Acid?
Clinically, alpha lipoic acid seems to be a useful supplement in treating hepatitis C. It can also be used for painful nerve conditions in diabetes, and may help slow down the aging process itself through its reduction in free radicals.
Dr. Berkson uses ALA along with low dose naltrexone (LDN) for the reversal of a number of more serious health conditions such as:
• Lupus
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Dermatomyositis (an inflammatory muscle disease)
• Autoimmune diseases
Most of his patients normalize in about one month on this combination of ALA and LDN.
What is Low Dose Naltrexone?
Naltrexone (generic name) is a pharmacologically active opioid antagonist, conventionally used to treat drug- and alcohol addiction – normally at doses of 50mg to 300mg. As such, it’s been an FDA approved drug for over two decades.
However, researchers have found that at very low dosages (3 to 4.5 mg), naltrexone has immunomodulating properties that may be able to successfully treat cancer malignancies and a wide range of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, and Crohn’s disease, just to name a few.
As explained on the informative website www.lowdosenaltrexone.org, when you take LDN at bedtime — which blocks your opioid receptors for a few hours in the middle of the night — it is believed to up-regulate vital elements of your immune system by increasing your body’s production of metenkephalin and endorphins (your natural opioids), hence improving immune function.
Can Alpha Lipoic Acid Help Your Workout?
Alpha lipoic acid can be a potent aid when you exercise vigorously.
In my interview, Dr. Berkson gives an anecdotal story about a friend – an international weight lifting champion – who regularly uses ALA prior to meets.
Unfortunately, there are no set guidelines on dosage and timing. It can be highly individual, and is something that requires a little bit of trial and error in order to get it just right.
But if you suffer from any of the conditions listed above or diabetes it would certainly seem like a useful supplement to consider.
From Naturopathic Doctor to Nutritionist
My journey to try to detox because of multiple chemical sensitivity has taken a slight turn. It seems the intestinal repair the naturopathic doctor recommended caused stomach problems. With my many other ailments, I have GERD and it was getting very bad. I stopped the repair complex.
It’s funny how these alternative doctors think nothing of having you spend money. But, I must say some of them can be very helpful.
I haven’t gone back to the naturopathic doctor yet. I went to see an nutritionist instead. She wants me to stick to the blood test results diet, and then after a month or two start reintroducing foods I am mildly intolerant of. This is an elimination diet.
The problem I’m having lately is a tightness and lump in my throat. I’m assuming it’s gastro related. I’m using Zegerid for almost two weeks now and my GERD is better, but the tightness on my throat still happens.
I guess I’ll have to see an ENT. The throat problem can stem from one of three things: multiple sclerosis, an allergic reaction, and GERD. Well, actually there is a 4th possibility, a hiatal hernia. It’s very important to find out which is the cause.
Oh, I just bought a book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Detoxing Your Body by Delia Quigley. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but when I do, I’ll let you know how it is.
Should You Avoid Genetically Modified Foods?
The more I read about genetically modified (GMO) foods the more I want to avoid them. This unfortunately is a HUGE problem since just about everything we eat has GMO foods in it.
Those of us with chronic illnesses need to be especially careful of what we eat. Read on . . .
At Mercola.com, they go into 10 reasons you should do your best to avoid these harmful GMO foods.
10 Reasons to Avoid Genetically Modified Foods at Mercola.com
1. Eating genetically modified (GM) foods may cause disease
GMOs may be the greatest health disaster in the American diet. Within 9 years of their introduction in 1996, multiple chronic illnesses jumped from 7 percent to 13 percent of the population,[1] food allergies doubled in less time, and many other ailments have been on the rise.
Millions may already be suffering health problems caused by genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their diet. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has urged doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients, and cites animal studies that show how GMOs cause disorders such as vital organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system problems, accelerated aging, infertility, and dysfunctional regulation of insulin and cholesterol.
Baby rats from moms that ate GM soy were smaller than those fed natural soy. More than half the GM soy group died within three weeks. Irina Ermakova, 2005-2007.
2. GMOs might cause infertility or hurt newborns
When GM soy flour was added to the diets of female rats, most of their babies died within three weeks—compared to only a 10 percent death rate among mothers fed natural soy.[2] The GM-fed offspring were smaller, and later had problems getting pregnant.[3]
When male rats were fed GM soy, their testicles changed from the normal pink color to dark blue.[4] Mice testicles also showed changes, including damaged young sperm cells.[5]
The DNA in mice embryos functioned differently when their parents ate GM soy.[6] And an Austrian government study reported that mice fed GM corn had fewer and smaller babies.[7]
About two dozen US farmers say that thousands of their pigs became sterile after consuming certain GM corn varieties. Some had false pregnancies, others gave birth to bags of water.
Cows and bulls also became infertile when fed the same corn.[8] Investigators in the state of Haryana, India, report that most buffalo that ate GM cottonseed had reproductive complications such as premature deliveries, abortions, infertility, and prolapsed uteruses. Many calves died.[9]
3. GM corn contains a toxic pesticide in every bite
Some GM varieties produce poison—their DNA creates an insect killing “Bt-toxin” in every cell. Monsanto and others claim that the toxin is safe for humans and mammals because the gene that produces it comes from the soil bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis.
Farmers have long used these natural bacteria as a pesticidal spray. But when the spray was widely dispersed to fight gypsy moths in Washington and Vancouver, about 500 people reported allergic and flu-like symptoms.[10]
Genetic engineers insert the bacteria’s toxin-creating gene into corn and cotton plants, which produce a more toxic poison. It’s thousands of times more concentrated than the spray and cannot be washed off.
Now, thousands of Indian farm laborers who are exposed to Monsanto’s Bt cotton plants are suffering from the same symptoms as those in the Pacific Northwest.[11]
In addition, thousands of sheep, goats, and buffalo have died after grazing on Bt cotton plants.[12] Countless other livestock have suffered reproductive disorders, skin disruptions, and upper respiratory ailments.
In one small feeding study, all the sheep that consumed Bt plants died within a month. Those that ate natural plants remained healthy.[13]
Bt corn is also linked to animal deaths in Germany[14] and The Philippines,[15] and according to an Italian government study, evokes serious immune responses in mice.[16] Even Monsanto’s 90-day rat feeding studies with Bt corn showed vital organ damage and signs of toxicity.[17]
4. GMOs might cause allergies
Soon after GM soy was introduced to the UK, soy allergies skyrocketed by 50 percent.[18] There are many reasons why people may be more reactive to GMOs.
•    GM soy, corn, and papaya fail the allergy screening protocol recommended by the World Health Organization; their GM proteins have properties of known allergens.[19]
•    The widespread collateral damage resulting from the process of creating GMOs can introduce new allergens or elevate existing ones. GM corn contains a new unintended allergen[20] and GM soy has up to seven times more of the soy allergen trypsin inhibitor.[21]
•    Preliminary allergy tests confirm that some people have skin prick reactions to GM soy, but not to a wild natural variety.[22]
•    Consuming GMOs may also provoke allergies to other foods.
•    Mice not only reacted to Bt-toxin[23] and an experimental GM pea,[24] they then started reacting to other foods that previously had no impact.
•    GM soy drastically reduces digestive enzymes in mice.[25] If your digestive ability is also impaired, you could become allergic to many types of food.
5. GMOs have higher residues of poisonous herbicide
The primary reason crops are engineered is to allow them to drink poison. They’re called herbicide tolerant, and are inserted with bacterial genes that allow them to survive otherwise deadly doses of toxic herbicide.
Biotech companies sell the seed and herbicide as a package. Monsanto sells Roundup Ready crops and Roundup herbicide. Bayer CropScience sells Liberty Link crops and Liberty herbicide.
Between 1996 and 2008, US farmers sprayed an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on these poison drinking GMOs.[26]
Because weeds are becoming resistant to the overused herbicide, farmers are spraying considerably more each year. The last 2 years of the 13-year study alone accounted for 46 percent of the increased herbicide use.
6. GM genes can convert your intestinal bacteria into living factories that continuously produce pesticides or other harmful products
The ONLY published GMO human feeding study (that’s right, there’s only one) confirmed that genes transfer from GM soybeans into the DNA of bacteria living inside our small intestines and continue to function.[27]
Human subjects that ate Roundup Ready soybeans ended up with “Roundup Ready gut bacteria”—unkillable with Roundup. If the pesticide-producing Bt gene in corn chips were also to transfer, it could turn your intestinal flora into living pesticide factories—possibly for the long term.
7. GMOs are approved without adequate safety studies
In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration claimed they had no information showing that GM foods were substantially different from conventionally grown foods. Therefore absolutely no safety studies were required.
But secret internal memos made public by a lawsuit show that the actual consensus among FDA scientists was that GMOs can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged long-term safety studies.
Sadly, the FDA official in charge of policy ignored the warnings. He was Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s former attorney and later their vice president.
Because of him, the same biotech companies who have been found guilty of hiding toxic effects of their chemical products are now in charge of determining whether their GM foods are safe. A close look at their so-called GMO safety studies shows how they rig research to avoid problems. They’ve got bad science down to a science.
Tragically, Michael Taylor, who may be responsible for more food-related illness and death in human history, is now back at the FDA as the US Food Safety Czar.
8. GMOs cause irreversible genetic pollution
GMOs cross pollinate and spread into the environment. A total recall is impossible.
The self-propagating genetic pollution already released will outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste.
9. GMOs work against feeding a hungry world
The most authoritative evaluation of agriculture, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development,[28] determined that the current GMOs have nothing to offer the goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods, and facilitating social and environmental sustainability.
The report was a three-year collaborative effort with 900 participants and 110 countries, and was co-sponsored by all the majors, e.g. the World Bank, FAO, UNESCO, WHO. In reality, GMOs reduce yield,[29] increase farmers’ dependence on multinationals, reduce biodiversity, increase herbicide use, and take money away from more successful and appropriate methods.
In developing nations, GMOs can be catastrophic.
In India, for example, Monsanto convinced hundreds of thousands of farmers to take out high interest loans to pay for expensive GM cotton seeds and associated chemicals. Inconsistent yields left desperate farmers unable to even pay back their loans. The UK Daily Mail estimates that an astounding 125,000 indebted GM cotton farmers committed suicide.[30]
10. By avoiding GMOs, you help create a tipping point to drive them out of our food supply.
Because GMOs give no consumer benefits, if even a small percentage of us start rejecting brands that contain them, GM ingredients will become a marketing liability. Food companies will kick them out.
The tipping point can come quickly.
In Europe, for example, within 10 weeks of a high profile GMO safety scandal that hit the papers in 1999, virtually every major food company committed to stop using GM foods. In the US, a consumer rebellion against genetically modified bovine growth hormone used on dairy cows has also reached a tipping point. Drugged milk and/or yogurt has been rejected by Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Dannon, Yoplait, and about 60 of the top 100 dairies so far.
The Campaign for Healthier Eating in America is designed to achieve a tipping point against GMOs in the US. The number of non-GMO shoppers needed is probably just 5 percent of the population.
They key is to educate consumers about the documented health dangers and provide a Non-GMO Shopping Guide, to make avoiding GMOs much easier. Thus, by choosing healthier non-GMO brands, and telling others about GMOs so they can do the same, we can quickly reclaim a non-GMO food supply.
Visit the Campaign’s website for GMO educational materials to read, watch, listen to, and pass onto others.
Toxins Weaken and Disrupt our Immune System
The body has an amazing design; it actually cleans itself and removes harmful toxins through various processes. Each organ and system relies on the others to due their part, the liver being the main filter, detoxifier, for the body.
Toxins come from within our body, from food and natural processes, and from external sources such as pesticides and other chemicals. While our body is made to efficiently detoxify itself, the amount of external toxins that bombard our system through food, drinks (including water), the air we breathe, and even through out skin, on a daily basis, it too much for the liver to handle.
When our liver is over-loaded with toxins it cannot function properly. This affects our immune system. Being part of the detoxification process, the immune system helps target and destroy invading enemies such as toxins, harmful bacteria, and viruses. If the liver isn’t functioning properly, the immune system will not function properly. This is one of the reasons food allergies and other allergies are on the rise, and why multiple chemical sensitivity and autoimmune illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue, are affecting more and more people. The immune system is overburdened.
According to an article at Care2.com, “What’s in Your Chemical Cocktail,” by Delia Quigley:
The majority of people in America begin their morning with a cup of tea or coffee and a dose of DDT, malathion, paraquat, diazinon, and a bit of Round Up (sprayed on the coffee plant). Milk or cream comes with acceptable amounts of bovine growth hormone, a shot of antibiotics, and a few steroid molecules for good measure. One or two teaspoons of sugar filtered through slaughtered bone ash prevents it from caking, and a bowl of genetically modified cornflakes carries up to 50 different pesticides just to bring it to the table on this lovely morning. To top it off a sip of orange juice requires 253 gallons of water and half a gallon of tractor fuel before landing on the breakfast table. Good morning, America, your daily chemical intake has only just begun.
There is no way to escape the chemicals that manufacturers and the government are allowing into our society. Quigley finishes her article by encouraging us all to become “Chemical Busters” by choosing products that are least harmful to us and the environment. If our concerns and voices don’t matter, hitting them in the pockets hopefully will.
Until next time,
Naturopatic Doctors and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
I know it’s been a while, and I apologize. I’ve taken on a writing gig that is hording in on my other writing time. And, I presented a free one-day workshop for beginner children’s writers on May 1st. Preparation for that was also a time drainer.
Okay, on to my topic. I think in one of my past posts I mentioned that I’m becoming more and more allergic to antibiotics . . . to the point where I’m concerned. So, I thought it was time to detox my body . . . even my allergist thought it would be a good idea.
I let my fingers do the walking and I found a licensed naturopathic doctor who has office hours once a week not far from my neighborhood. I made an appointment over a month ago and she felt it would be a good idea to get special blood work to determine how many foods I’m allergic to.
The idea is if you’re allergic to foods that you eat regularly, you are constantly bombarding your body with substances it views as foreign and invading. It will react with an immune system response. In addition to this, usually when you have chronic and severe GERD, it is representative of leaky gut syndrome.
Well, I got the results of my blood work last week and I’m allergic to foods I eat everyday. The results are broken down into Severe Intolerance, Moderate Intolerance and Mild Intolerance. They test for 100 foods.
It turns out I am highly intolerant to clams, ginger, garlic, turkey, sweet potato–the last three I use to eat regularly. And, there are many more foods I’m intolerant to than foods I am tolerant of. So, diet changes have been made.
I’m moderately intolerant to soy. I try to avoid cow’s milk because of congestion problems and used soy everyday. Who knew.
One problem starting off with this is they test you for 100 foods, but you have no idea if you can eat foods beyond those 100 tested for.
I happen to be intolerant to every spice I use and that is used when eating out: garlic, oregano, parsley, and basil. I am also intolerant to soy and corn–have you read any food labels lately. Even many breads have soy protein in them or use soy flour. And, corn is like air now, it’s everywhere and in everything.
This will be an interesting journey. I have started an intestinal repair complex and use live acidophilus.
The good news so far is I’ve lost 6 pounds!
I will try to keep this blog updated once a week, or at the very most 10 days.
The FDA and Food Safety
I just read an interesting and alarming article about the FDA and our food.  The FDA only inspects only 25% of all U.S. food facilities. As someone with multiple chemical sensitivity, I am very concerned about our food supply.
Here’s a bit from the article:
Do you wash your store-bought, pre-washed salad mix? Do you have a reverse osmosis filter on your home drinking water? Are you still buying packaged ground beef from your local supermarket, despite the numerous warnings? Do you care if there may be trace amounts of BPA in your canned soup? If you have anything to say about any of the above issues, or the myriad of health hazards and food safety issues that have plagued the national food system for the past few years, than the fine folks at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) want to hear from you.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Genetically Modified Foods
Genetically modified (GM) crops have become a horror for those suffering with allergies and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).
Allergies and MCS are a result of our immune systems becoming over stimulated and our livers not being able to process and eliminate all the toxins that we are bombarded with.
But, the powers that be are only concerned with the might dollar and profits–harmful side effects for the masses does not fit into the equation.
In an article at Mercola.com the effects of GM foods are frightening:
In the only human feeding study ever published on genetically modified foods, seven volunteers ate so-called Roundup-ready soybeans. These are soybeans that have herbicide-resistant genes inserted into them in order to survive being sprayed with otherwise deadly doses of Roundup herbicide.
In three of the seven volunteers, the gene inserted into the soy transferred into the DNA of their intestinal bacteria, and continued to function long after they stopped eating the GM soy!
No one is sure of the possible long term effects of genetically modifying foods, but this doesn’t stop the process from being done .
According to the same article:
About 85 percent of the corn grown corn grown is genetically engineered to either produce an insecticide, or to survive the application of herbicide. And about 91-93 percent of all soybeans are genetically engineered to survive massive doses of Roundup herbicide.
So, what this means is that almost any food product you buy that has corn or soy will most likely have the GM form in it. And, we’re not just talking about corn and soy, we’re talking about all their derivatives such as high fructose corn syrup.
But, these aren’t the only foods that are genetically modified there is also cottonseed and canola to name two.
I try hard to buy organic foods, but I if I’m not mistaken, when you buy a food labeled organic it means the product has to be at least 70% organic and not include sewer sludge.
What a world!
Until next time,
Karen Cioffi
Be Careful Using Supplements
Today, most of us use supplements. We either take a multi-vitamin, vitamin C, D or E, or  an host of other products that are marketed to help us obtain better healthier and stay there.
Well, take care when choosing those supplements. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 2009, a number of dietary supplements were found to have prescription drugs in them. And, these drugs were not listed on the labels.
In a world in which more and more people are developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) it’s crucial that we as consumers know exactly is in anything we ingest.
Why is this happening?
Well, unfortunately, dietary supplements are not monitored by the FDA. This means any company can decide to open up shop and sell you anything. In addition to this, these products are not monitored for other unknown contaminants such as bacteria, insects, lead, and so on.
In the government’s infinite wisdom, a federal law was passed in 1994 that eliminated the requirement of these manufacturers to pass clinical trials.
These tests would insure the product is safe, but alas, they are no longer in place. In addition to this, these supplements are not required to be standardized.
It does amaze me that with all the people using these dietary supplements, the government doesn’t deem it necessary to place controls on them.
What this means for you and me is:
Dietary supplements can actually be dangerous, primarily because there could be ingredients that may have harmful side effects and we wouldn’t even know they were included in the product.
These companies do not have to include each and every ingredient in their products. It means we cannot assume these products are safe, even if the bottle states, “all natural.”
In an article, Danger at the Health-Food Store in the Daily Health News at BottomLineSecrets.com:
Any type of supplement could potentially be contaminated with poor-quality, even toxic ingredients. But one of the most potent dangers — the presence of active pharmaceutical medications — is most likely to be found in three categories of products: those for sexual enhancement…for weight loss… and for athletic performance. Also be wary of products marketed not just for general health but for particular conditions — such as diabetes, insomnia or high cholesterol — which are likely to contain numerous ingredients and thus pose a greater risk.
What are some precautions a consumer can take?
1. Be careful! Don’t assume a supplement company has your best interest at heart.
2. Talk to your doctor or try to find a doctor who is familiar with supplements and herbs. I actually just saw a Naturopathic doctor today because of my MSC. These doctors are well trained in this area. I will be starting a slow paced and mild detox program.
3. The above article recommended using single substance products as they would be less likely to have additional ingredients.
4. Check: http://nccam.nih.gov/health/supplements and www.ConsumerLab.com. They can provide information on supplemental products.
5. As in all health articles I write, talk to your doctor about any supplements or programs you decide to try.
