Why it is important to make sure your symptoms are from anxiety and not another illness/disease:
Panic attack symptoms can mimic heart attack, stroke, and other serious illnesses. It’s essential to make sure your symptoms are not the result of a life threatening episode.
If you have a history of panic attacks this can cause you to assume it’s just anxiety. Be sure to check with your doctor when experiencing any unusual symptoms.
It’s understandable to prefer to think your symptoms are from anxiety, nobody wants to be in a life or death situation, or suffering from a serious illness. But, it’s better to know for sure and be informed. An ouce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Ignoring the other possible causes of your symptoms may lead to disaster. It’s always beneficial and safer to seek immediate medical attention, especially if you’re over 50.
In addition, if you have a history of panic attacks, be careful that your doctor doesn’t dismiss your symptoms. Make sure he/she takes the proper tests to rule out a life threatening or disabling illness. For years I was told my symptoms were anxiety related when in fact, I had Multiple Sclerosis.
Have your symptoms taken seriously?
1. Don’t assume that doctors are always right in their diagnosis.
2. Listen to your gut feeling
3. Get other medical opinions if not satisfied
4. Keep a list of your symptoms and take them with you to doctor visits
5. Carefully and calmly explain what’s going on to your doctor
Remember: Doctors can make a mistake – they are human.
